Stop Super Speeders is a targeted approach to dangerous driving that uses Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA) technology to prevent repeat and extreme dangerous speeders from continuing to drive at dangerous speeds.
What Is Stop Super Speeders?
Stop Super Speeders legislation focuses on drivers who repeatedly engage in extreme speeding, reckless driving, street racing, or other dangerous driving behavior. Traditional penalties such as tickets and license suspensions do not always prevent repeat offenders from continuing to drive dangerously. Stop Super Speeders provides another tool: requiring drivers who meet criteria established by law to use technology that prevents their vehicles from being driven at dangerous speeds. The goal is simple: stop dangerous speeding before it results in another death or serious injury.
How Intelligent Speed Assistance Works
Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA) uses location and speed-limit information to limit a vehicle's speed based on the applicable speed limit. Under Stop Super Speeders laws, ISA is targeted at drivers who meet criteria established by law because of serious or repeated dangerous driving offenses. It is not a proposal to require ISA for every Oregon driver. ISA can also provide an alternative to simply taking away someone's ability to drive. A person can retain mobility for work, school, family responsibilities, and other needs while being prevented from driving at dangerous speeds.
Why Oregon Needs Stop Super Speeders
Speed affects both the likelihood of a crash and its severity. At higher speeds, drivers have less time to react, and the consequences of a crash can become much more severe. Families for Safe Streets PDX believes Oregon should be able to intervene effectively when someone demonstrates a pattern of extreme or repeated dangerous speeding. We should not have to wait until that behavior results in another death or life-changing injury. The technology to prevent dangerous repeat speeding exists. We believe Oregon should use it.
A Growing National Movement
Families for Safe Streets is leading a national Stop Super Speeders campaign. As of 2026, nine jurisdictions have enacted Stop Super Speeders laws using Intelligent Speed Assistance to address dangerous repeat speeding.
